City of Newark inaugurates Mayor Baraka's Commission on the Status of Women

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

To kick off Women's History Month, Mayor Baraka held a ceremony at City Hall to "officially welcome and congratulate the awesome and dynamic group of ladies, who have been appointed to the Mayor Ras J. Baraka Commission on the Status of Women. The Mayor also stated "you are making history as members of the Commission on the Status of Women in Newark, functioning in Essex County as advocates, policy makers, and ambassadors on behalf of this great City, helping us transform Newark into a community we can all believe in."

The ceremony, organized by former Councilwoman Bessie Walker, was very well-attended with Members of the Municipal Council, various family members, friends, and residents. The Chairperson Emerita, Trish Morris-Yamba gave a brief history of the Commission. Amina Baraka, the Mayor's mother, gave a very inspiring greeting to the audience and words of inspiration to the women. We would like to extend our congratulations to these very accomplished women and look forward to witnessing their great work.
